Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the neurodiverse community and the built environment. As architects, we design the built environment for the people. The building design process starts with the brief. Then, followed by sketch design, design documentation, tender documentation, contract documentation, contract administration and defects inspection.
Rarely, architects follow up with the clients, end users, and facilities managers with post-occupation surveys in increments of a year, 5 years, 10 years and 30 years to conduct analysis of elements that have been successful and unsuccessful.
This research is about how the built environment affects neurodiverse people and how they interact with each other within the built environment. This could be neurodiverse people who are merely passing by; and more importantly people who are living, working, playing, and sleeping within the built environment. The outcome of this research is to identify and mitigate or minimise elements that contribute to positive and negative experiences for neurodiverse community. The approach for new and existing built environment will be different.
